How to choose a kids room study table design

  • Right height: the child's elbows should rest at desk level with feet flat on the floor or a footrest.
  • Enough depth: at least 18–20 inches for books; 24 inches if there's a computer.
  • Light: a task lamp with warm-to-neutral light on the side opposite the writing hand.
  • Storage: drawers for stationery, shelves for books, a pinboard for timetables.
  • Distractions: face the desk away from the TV and the door if possible.

Materials and rough cost factors

  • Material: termite-treated ply with laminate is durable and easy to clean.
  • Adjustability: adjustable mechanisms cost more but last through the years.
  • Size and storage: hutches, drawers and pegboards add cost.
  • Built-in vs loose: built-in desks fit perfectly; loose desks can move with you.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the child's height. Roughly 21–24 inches for young children and 27–30 inches for teens. Adjustable desks solve this.

A wall-mounted desk or a loft bed with a desk underneath.

Ideally towards a wall or window, away from the TV and door. Many families follow Vastu and face east or north.

What should a teenage girl's study table have?+

Enough space for books and a laptop, drawers, good lighting and often a mirror or pinboard to personalise it.
