Master bedroom layout as per Vastu: a practical guide

Traditional Vastu guidelines for the master bedroom, and how to apply them sensibly in a modern flat.

Many families like to plan the master bedroom layout as per Vastu. Traditional Vastu Shastra offers guidelines on the room's direction, where the bed and wardrobe go, which colours to use and what to avoid. In a modern flat you can't always follow every rule, but you can usually follow the most important ones.

Below are 12 commonly followed Vastu guidelines for the master bedroom, explained simply, followed by tips on adapting them to a real home. These are traditional beliefs; follow what feels right for your family.

01Master bedroom in the south-west

Vastu traditionally places the master bedroom in the south-west of the home, linked to stability. In flats, choose the bedroom closest to that direction.

02Head towards the south

Sleeping with your head to the south (or east) is widely recommended. Place the headboard against the south wall where possible.

03Bed against a solid wall

The headboard should rest on a solid wall, not under a window or against a door.

04Avoid beams above the bed

Sleeping under an exposed beam is considered unlucky. A false ceiling can hide it.

05Wardrobe on the south or west wall

Heavy furniture like wardrobes is placed on the south or west walls, keeping north and east lighter.

06Mirrors not facing the bed

Mirrors facing the bed are avoided. Put the dressing mirror inside a wardrobe door or on a side wall.

07Soft, earthy colours

Light pink, beige, peach, light brown and soft green are considered calming for the master bedroom. Avoid very dark or bright red walls.

08Entrance in north, east or west

The bedroom door ideally opens in the north, east or west part of the room.

09Keep the north-east light

Keep the north-east corner of the bedroom clear or light, perhaps with a small plant or reading chair.

10Avoid electronics near the bed

TVs and work desks facing the bed are avoided. If you must have a TV, cover it when not in use.

11One mattress for couples

A single mattress rather than two joined ones is traditionally recommended for couples.

12Clutter-free under the bed

Store only soft items like linen under the bed; avoid broken things or metal junk.

Applying Vastu in a modern flat

  • Prioritise the big three. Bedroom position, bed direction and headboard on a solid wall matter most to most families.
  • Use a compass app. Check directions on site; builders' plans are not always oriented correctly.
  • Work with the layout. If the bed can't face the ideal direction, choose the next-best option rather than squeezing it in awkwardly.
  • Fix beams with a ceiling. A simple gypsum false ceiling solves the beam issue.
  • Keep it practical. Comfort, ventilation and walking space matter for good sleep too.

Bedroom direction as per Vastu for other rooms: south-east bedrooms are traditionally less preferred for couples; north-west bedrooms are often suggested for guests or grown children.

Materials and rough cost factors

Planning a Vastu-friendly layout doesn't have to cost extra. Costs come from:

  • False ceiling to hide beams.
  • Moving electrical points if the bed position changes.
  • Wardrobe and bed made to fit the preferred walls.
  • Paint in suggested colours.
