POP ceiling design: 13 simple and modern ideas

A 12–18 inch border around the room with a hidden LED strip is the most popular simple POP design. It keeps the centre at full height and gives a soft glow. Paint it the same white as the ceiling for a clean look.

Two levels stepping up toward the centre add depth to a large hall. Put cove lighting in the upper step and spotlights in the lower one. It works best in rooms with at least 10 feet of ceiling height.

Soft curves instead of straight lines make a room feel gentler and more modern. POP is ideal for this because it can be shaped by hand on site. Curves look great above a round dining table or bed.

A circular recess in the middle of the ceiling with a chandelier or pendant creates a focal point. Line the dome edge with warm cove light. It suits formal drawing rooms and dining areas.

Hand-made POP design for the roof includes cornices, floral corners and ceiling roses made by skilled artisans. It suits traditional and colonial-style homes, including many old Kolkata houses with high ceilings. Keep the walls simple so the detail stands out.

Combine a white POP border with wooden or wood-finish strips in the centre. The mix of white and wood feels warm and modern. Use laminate or PVC strips in humid rooms rather than solid wood.

A raised rectangular POP panel just above the bed, with light glowing from its edges, defines the sleeping area. Match its width to the bed and headboard. Avoid placing a fan right on the panel edge.

Squares, diamonds or a grid in shallow relief give a contemporary look without heavy decoration. Keep the depth small so the ceiling doesn't feel busy. Spotlights can sit inside the grid squares.

Paint the recessed part in a soft colour like light grey, sage or beige and keep the border white. This is one of the easiest POP design colour combinations and works in almost every room. Avoid dark ceiling colours in small rooms.

In small bedrooms or kitchens, a thin border with a single LED line is enough. Keep the drop to a few inches. The room stays airy while the wiring and light stay neatly hidden.

Slim aluminium profile lights set flush into the POP create sharp lines of light. Use them in parallel lines, an L-shape or a rectangle. They give a very modern look and use little power.

A small dome or stepped POP ceiling above the mandir gives the pooja area a special feel. Warm hidden lights make the idols glow. Keep it away from the diya flame and allow good ventilation.

Use gypsum boards for the flat parts and POP only for curves and details. This gives you the clean finish of gypsum and the flexibility of POP. Many modern ceilings are actually built this way.
